Are you the type of person that likes to know what is going to happen next at any given moment in time? I like to watch certain television sitcoms or movies and watch them over and over again to the point that I can repeat what will be said next by the actors before they say their next line. I tend to crave the familiar and gravitate towards those types of environments. While other people may like the excitement and thrill of doing things outside of the ordinary, that was not my ideal norm. Perhaps it is based on my upbringing and what was instilled in me from a child to early adulthood. I followed (for the most part) all of my parents' rules. My mother told us to go to school, get a job or career, travel, and then settle down and get married and then have children if we chose to do so.
But Then Life Happened
After years of living in a box of familiarity, living in the same house since the age of seven, going to elementary, Junior, and High School and College in the same neighborhood, and then working in the city, I became extremely comfortable. Life seemed to be going well in my eyes. Sure, I had some struggles like everyone else. Dealing with peer pressure, financial debt, and my social life was my main state of focus and concern. I was not looking to do anything out of the ordinary. I wanted to have a well-paying job, travel to places I added to my bucket list, find a mate or "help" a potential mate find me, get married and maybe have twins (my dad was a twin, so I was looking forward to that same one-shot deal). I had my whole life planned out in my head. The typical cookie-cutter "so-called" American Pie dream. Husband, Wife, Children, and perhaps a pet living in a house. I was looking for that "real love" (I'm hearing Mary J. Blige singing in my head as I write this) in all the wrong places and in all the wrong men!
When my "Real Love" Stepped In
What I was searching for finally arrived in March 2003. God saved my life! He filled me with the free gift of the Holy Spirit just like He filled those in the upper room on the day of Pentecost (the Book of Acts 2:1-4). My comfortable world turned upside down! But God was and is still not finished with me yet! Over the years, my love for God has increased. My desire to please Him has superseded the "people pleasing syndrome" that plagued me from a young age. I was always the one that had to be strong. I was the oldest child in the house and the oldest grandchild which means I had a lot of responsibilities and took care of other's needs and sometimes had to put my desires on the back burner.
When The Change Began
I was operating in fear. I did not know who I was. God took me on a journey to discover myself by learning who He is. I am still on this journey. As I write these words, God is taking me through yet another process of discovery and opening me up to be vulnerable, open and real with myself. The point of this blog is to help others who are struggling with stepping out of the box. So many people are comfortable with their lives and filled with so much anxiety that they don't know where to go or what to do to get unstuck. Some people like living a mundane, routine-filled lifestyle with tasks scheduled out every day of the week and checking off items on their planners. If this is you and it is what God has told you to do, do it. If God is speaking to you and wants you to do something you are uncomfortable doing; please do not hesitate. DO IT! He is calling you out to do something that will bring glory to Himself. Sometimes that "thing" may seem so foolish that we will start questioning ourselves and God. We will even talk ourselves out of a blessing or getting to the next level in our life journey because we allow doubt and fear to rob us of God's blessing in our lives.
Do You Want to Be Used?
I had the privilege to have a conversation recently with a preacher client. He shared with me a few simple words which resonated with me. He said we must learn how to do it afraid. That was a word from the Lord dropped down from heaven and illuminated my whole being. God speaks to His children often. The problem is, we are not always in the position to receive and hear what He says to us to do or where to go. We are overwhelmed with things taking place all around us. We are consumed with things that are not worth putting all our efforts wrapped into it. Sometimes we hear and get scared and talk ourselves out of obeying and doing what He has called us to do. I beg you don't do that. Please do not ignore God's prompting. He wants to use you for something specific to accomplish for Him. He wants us to believe in Him and His power. Learning to do what we must do even when we feel uncomfortable doing it is fulfilling. God will make the provision for whatever vision is given. How you hear the voice of God and the prompting of the Holy Spirit in your life is important to know.
Did You Say Start the Business?
I remember when God first told me to start my business. I was scared and questioned God. I had recently taped a special service for a coworker's friend. It was my first time videotaping and editing an event for someone in my life. I asked God, "did you say to start the business?" and I asked God to please give me a confirmation. I heard Him say again, "start the business." Well, a few weeks later, I received a call from a friend who told me about a church member who needed videography services for a life event. I did not feel confident yet, I asked God to confirm, and this next opportunity was open to me. I decided to walk by faith and I took the assignment. I hired someone else to do the videotaping. I directed the event and did all the editing, and received compensation for the event. Most of all the client was happy! They explained that they could have done the job, but they wanted to enjoy the event in honor of their loved one's recovery from a life-threatening illness. I was so nervous. It was out of my comfort zone, but once everything was over, I was thrilled! I felt rejuvenated and was looking forward to the next open door that God had waiting for me. After that event, I was ready to begin the process of filing for my business papers, sought clients, and moved to other opportunities through the years that included starting a streaming channel and the list continues. Only God knows what would have happened if I did not follow His directions to "start the business."
??????????????????????If God is telling you to step out on faith and gives you dreams and visions to do other things that seem off track, do it by faith even if you feel scared. When you feel uncomfortable, you are on the right path to making God smile. It is now your time to "get comfortable while being uncomfortable."
