Within a two-year span, the world has been faced with catastrophic casualties due to the world-wide pandemic known as the Coronavirus. Millions of people have died, and lives have been turned upside down. I can account for several family and church members as well as friends who have died within the two-year span. Some were casualties of the virus and others due to lack of treatment options or tragedies because of certain environmental factors which developed as a result of the spread of the virus and need for lock-down across the country.
I remember being told by my place of employment that we were going to adhere to a "work from home" posture until further notice due to the beginning stages of the coronavirus outbreak in the United States. I was happy with the idea of working at home as I did not care for the commute to get to and from work every day. As weeks and then months went by, I became comfortable with working from home. I was able to transform my sunporch area into my home office area. The longer I spent in the house, the more I found things in the home to do. The home became my place to become creative and I began making a punch list of projects I wanted to address. Although I enjoy projects and spending time in the home, the entire city on lock down mode and the rebellious nature of people began to manifest in harmful ways which affected home life.
Long lines to purchase groceries, finding essential household items such as toilet tissue, hand sanitizer, bleach and Lysol was a struggle and was subject to price gouging practices by retailers across the country. I began to feel uncomfortable walking in and around the outside perimeters of my home because people were acting out. The mentally ill would walk around all throughout the day and night. The news had everyone hooked by the daily updates and reports of the pandemic numbers and its effect on hospitals, funeral homes and society as a whole. Job loss and food insecurities along with mixed messages from the nation's leadership added to the stress factors,
I was urged to get out of the house. My family and friends wanted me to go for a walk because according to them, I was a hermit. I thought I was ok, yet others were noticing something else that I could not see. Fear and anger were creeping in. I did everything possible to avoid getting infected with Covid. I wanted to keep my distance from people as much as possible. Web based applications became the ultimate escape tool to avoid human contact. I could conduct interviews, have business and work meetings using Skype, Zoom and Social Media platforms whenever I needed to interact with others along with calling family and friends on the phone. Mentally, I was in a bad place. I allowed fear to creep in and take residence and I thought I was going to lose my mind. I contemplated seeking help from a therapist. I realized I needed to take some action. By talking about my feelings, fears, insecurities, and traumas, I was able to reassess any negative thoughts. I was able to forgive others and myself and ask God to forgive me. I felt free and the cloud that was hovering over me began to lift.
Although we now have new leadership in our nation and the coronavirus variants and vaccinations are the current talk of the world, an unsureness still lurks in the hearts of many people. Some people have thrived during this season. Career changes, marriages and new businesses have blossomed and flourished during the two-year span. Some have drawn closer to God by spending more time developing a deeper personal relationship with our heavenly Father. While others have succumbed to mental stresses and social issue debates and opinions which keep them bound, some are really trying to press forward and reinvent themselves by finding and living out exactly what God has called them to do to advance His kingdom. I think about the separation of the wheat from the tares in the bible in the book of Matthew chapter 13 verse 30. "Let both grow together until the harvest: and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather ye together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn."
In this season, it is important to know where you stand. Are you wheat or tares? Are you ready to stand up and fight despite the opposition from others who want you to give in to pressures? My hope is in God! That may mean doing things that you never imagined in your wildest dreams you would do. It may mean traveling to a foreign land to minister to the poor and needy. It may mean leaving your place of employment or your home to go to another state. Are you ready to take that leap of faith in God? Are you ready to step out of your comfort zone? Whew! All I can say is, I have a charge to keep and a God to glorify. What say you?
